Blogger Ad Code Converter - Help you place ads on blogspot

This handy tool automatically converts javascript ad code into the correct format so you can embed it directly into your new xml Blogger template. It’s perfect for converting AdSense, AdBrite, Chitika or any other javascript ad code you may have.

Have you ever tried to insert javascript ad code directly into your Blogger Template and it just wouldn’t work? Ok, everyone in the room can put their hands down now. This has always been a huge problem for blog authors using Google Blogger looking to monetize their site since almost all ad code contains javascript.
So why is this so darn difficult to do? The problem in the past was that Blogger users wanted more control over where and how frequently their block of ad code (usually AdSense) appeared. The Blogger Team listened to their customers and created an easy to use feature that allows you to setup AdSense in your individual posts with a simple checkbox selection.

Typical Blogger Error Messages

That’s great for most people but the places where you can insert widgets are rather limited and not as flexible as you’d like. So what if you want to put AdSense, AdBrite, Chitika or any other sort of javascript-related code elsewhere on your blog without having to use a widget? The answer in the past would be, “It’s just not easy”.
You would paste the Google AdSense, AdBrite, Chitika or any other javascript ad code into your xml Blogger template only do get an error like:
“Your template could not be parsed as it is not well-formed. Please make sure all XML elements are closed properly. XML error message: The processing instruction target matching “[xX][mM][lL]” is not allowed.”
or another really cryptic error message like:
“Your template could not be parsed as it is not well-formed. Please make sure all XML elements are closed properly. XML error message: The content of elements must consist of well-formed character data or markup.“.
In fact, more recently the Blogger xml parser seems to allow javascript code in your template without displaying an error message at all. You think all is well only to discover when you view your blog that nothing actually gets displayed. Grrr.

Using the Blogger Ad Code Converter

So how can I get around this and easily use ad code or any javascript inside my xml Blogger template? Introducing, the Blogger Ad Code Converter by eBlog Templates. This simple tool will take any block of javascript or html code and replace the characters that Google Blogger ignores with the correct ones. Here’s a real life example. Say I want to put a Google AdSense 468 x 60 banner ad into the header of my blog but there’s no widget to use. You’d have to manually go into AdSense and create a new ad unit to get the code. Here’s the result:

Now if you just pasted that ad unit code directly into your Blogger header you’d get an error or it just wouldn’t work. Most people would think Blogger was broken or wonder if it’s something they did when in fact it’s neither. The new Blogger uses xml which is much more strict and requires certain reserved characters like > < or & to be converted into xhtml entities. Here’s what your ad code needs to look like in order to work properly:

This only took me a few seconds to convert since I used the free and easy Blogger Ad Code Converter. There are actually posts out there that explain how to do this manually but who wants to take the time searching and replacing each character when you can convert unlimited sized ad code blocks with only one click?
After you’ve converted your ad code, paste it into your template and it should now work. Obviously before you make any changes to your Blogger template, it’s a good idea to back it up. You never know when you might make a mistake or revert to a previous version. Once you’ve done that, give the Blogger Ad Code Converter a try for free!

What Other Code Can it Convert?

Actually this tool is quite powerful and can be used for encoding any HTML or javascript into XHTML entities. Some popular javascript ad codes that are converted are AdSense, Text Link Ads, AdBrite, LinkWorth, Chitika, Amazon, and more. Another good use is if you need to post a large block of HTML or javascript code into your blog post you can just use this tool.
Technically, it does so by replacing the reserved HTML characters with their XHTML equivalents. It’s basically a simple HTML Encoder that automatically replaces all HTML special characters like <, >, & into entities <, >, &.
Please note: If you are using this tool to convert Google AdSense code you don’t need to worry about breaking the AdSense program policies. This tools is just encoding reserved HTML characters into usable XHTML entities for xml Blogger. When you paste the code into your blog, save it, and then view the source code for the page, you’ll notice your AdSense code is displaying as it was originally written. This modification will not alter the functionality of the code at all, and ensures that it will be displayed within Blogger correctly.

A Reality Check about Blogging for Money

Last week’s article in the Wall Street Journal revealed that my blog earnings are in excess of $250,000 per year (a very ballpark figure).

The problem with these type of articles is that they report in a few words just one element of a story - in this case my earnings.

While it’s true that I have built my blogging to a point where I’m able to earn good money blogging there are many things that an article like the one in the WSJ didn’t (and couldn’t) mention about how I was able to build my blogging up to this point.

The impact of this missing ‘back story’ is that much of the reality of blogging for money goes unseen by those looking at blogging as a potential income stream - leading some to naively enter into blogging with false expectations.

Of course when these expectations are not met things can get ugly with disappointment and anger being a common reaction. What disappoints me as a blogger writing on this topic is that I regularly see other bloggers feeding their readers with hype and false hopes about how easy it is to make big money from blogging. This only adds to the distance between their reader’s expectations and the reality of blogging for money.

The Reality of Blogging for Money

So what is the reality of building up one’s blogging to a point where they can make a full time living blogging?

Here are five facts that I’d like to share about my own story to give a more realistic picture to those considering getting into blogging as a way to make a living.

1. It takes a concerted long term effort

I have been blogging for five years. The first year was not for money in any way (although I learned a lot about blogging in that year) and the next two I worked 2-3 jobs at a time (and was studying part time) while I built my blogging up from a hobby, to part time job to a full time venture (more on my story here).

I’m often asked things like - ‘I need to make $xxxx in the next few months - how would you do it with a new blog?’

The average age of blogs in the Technorati Top 100 was over 3 years when I last surveyed it - while the occasional blogger has a fast rise to frame they are the exception. Building a successful blog takes a long time (it takes time to build readership, to work out how to monetize it etc) so take a long term approach and pace yourself.

2. It takes luck

I won’t speak for other bloggers but in my case I was very fortunate on many fronts. I started blogging at a good time (it was a lot less crowded and competitive back then).

  • I stumbled on making money from blogs quite accidentally
  • I started my first money making blog on the spur of the moment and picked a topic (digital
  • photography) without knowing what I was doing - but for the time it was right)
  • I met the right people at the right time
  • Bigger bloggers discovered me at opportune times

The lucky list could go on - but I was very lucky. Of course some people ‘make their own luck’ and to some extent I agree with this - there are ways to increase your chances of being lucky - but some of it is outside your hands. Sometimes the luck comes and sometimes it doesn’t.

3. It takes a lot of work

There’s been a lot of talk lately about how blogging less can mean more from your blog (example 1 and example 2). While I agree with this - that doesn’t mean you can just come up with a few posts on a whim every few days and expect the traffic (and money) to come rolling in. Over the last 3 years I’ve consistently worked 40-60+ hour weeks on my blogging. At one point I was posting 20-30 posts per day (mainly news related posts back then). Most bloggers that make a full time living from blogging work corresponding hours on it.

4. Many don’t make much money blogging

I’ve often used the analogy of Professional sports people to highlight that in any ‘game’ there are many who play it - less who make a little money from the game, even less who are able to earn a living from it (just) and just a small group who make big money from it. The same is true for bloggers. I’ve run many polls here at ProBlogger on how much people are earning from the medium (eg) and on every single occasion they reveal that the vast majority of bloggers are making very little per month. While it is possible to make amazing money from blogging the sad reality is that most don’t make more than pocket money. Even some blogs who ‘deserve’ to make money blogging don’t.

5. It’s hard

One thing that I’ve found to be common with when I had small/new blogs and now having blogs that are doing reasonably well is that in both instances it can be really hard to keep them going. The pressure to keep coming up with fresh ideas, to respond to critique of others, to deal with jealousy when others do well and more can be difficult to deal with. On some levels it gets easier to deal with as your blog grows - but on other levels the demands that you face from a larger readership can at times be overwhelming. Most bloggers that I know (big and small) have at one point or another been close to giving up - I know I have.

Feeling Depressed?

I don’t want to put a downer on those of you wanting to take your blogs to a level where you could make good money from blogging - the fact is that it is possible and and increasing number of people are making a part time or full time living from the medium - but I do think it’s important to have a realistic picture before getting into blogging for money.

While some bloggers do talk about blogging as a way to make quick money I’ve not had that experience myself. Perhaps others do get rich quick from blogging - but I’ve not met any successful bloggers who’ve told me that yet.

10 Tips for Using Aff Programs on your Blog

We’ve now looked at a number of popular affiliate programs for bloggers and today I’d like to finish off this series by giving a few tips that should help bloggers get the best results out of any affiliate program that they choose to run with.

1. Consider your Audience

It almost goes without saying - but it’s worth putting yourself in your readers shoes and consider what they might be looking for as they surf by your blog. Are they shopping for specific products? Might they be looking for related products or accessories? What would trigger them to purchase? Start with your reader in mind rather than the product. If you take this approach you could end up doing your reader a favor as well as making a few dollars on the side.

2. Genuine Recommendations and personal endorsements always work best

There are literally hundreds of thousands of products and services for you to choose from to recommend to your blog’s readers but making money from them is not as simple as randomly adding links to them from your blog. Your blog’s readers come back to your blog day after day because something about you resonates with them - they have at least some level of trust and respect for you and perhaps the quickest way to destroy this is to recommend that they buy something that you don’t fully believe will benefit them.

The best results I’ve had from affiliate programs are where I give an open and honest appraisal of the product - including both it’s strengths and weaknesses. The most successful affiliate program I’m involved with here at ProBlogger is Joel Comm’s e-book which I reviewed here. If you read the review you’ll see that I not only tell readers who I believe the book is for but I also mention those it is NOT for. In a sense I critique it. On a surface level one might think that this wasn’t a wise move and that I should have given a glowing review - however the sales that I’ve had through the program have proven otherwise. People want to know what they are buying first and even if they know a product has limitations they will buy it if it meets their particular need.

3. Link to Quality Products

We all like to make sure we’re buying the best products money can buy - your readers are no different to this and are more likely to make a purchase if you’ve found them the best product for them. Choose products and companies with good reputations and quality sales pages. There is nothing worse than giving a glowing review of a product only to send your reader to a page that looks cheap and nasty.

4. Contextual Deep Links work Best

When I started using the Amazon Associate Program I naively thought that all I had to do was put an Amazon banner ad (that linked to Amazon’s front page) at the top of my blog. I thought that my readers would see it and surf over to Amazon and buy up big - thereby making me a rich man. Nothing could have been further from reality - I was deluding myself.

I always says to bloggers that I’m consulting with that they should learn something from contextual advertising when it comes to affiliate programs. The secret of contextual ads like Adsense is that a reader is reading a post on a particular topic on your blog and when they see an advertisement for that same product they are more likely to click it than if they saw an ad for something else. The same is true for affiliate programs. A banner to a general page on every page on your site won’t be anywhere near as effective as multiple links throughout your blog that advertiser products that are relevant for readers reading particular parts of your blog.

So if you’re writing a blog about MP3 players and have a review for a particular product - the most effectively affiliate program that you could link to from within the content of that page would be one that links directly to a page selling that specific model of MP3 player. This is how I use the Amazon program today. It is more work than contextual advertising because you’re not just putting one piece of code into a template but rather need to place individual links on many pages - but I find that it’s been worth the effort.

5. Consider positioning of links

One of the things I go on and on about with Adsense optimization is the positioning of ads. I tell bloggers to position their ads in the hotspots on pages (like the top of a left hand side bar - or inside content - or at the end of posts above comments etc). The same principles are true for affiliate advertising.

6. Traffic levels are Important

While it’s not the only factor - traffic levels are obviously key when it comes to making money from almost any online activity. The more people that see your well placed, relevant and well designed affiliate links the more likely it is that one of them will make a purchase. So don’t just work on your links - work on building a readership. Not only this, consider how you might direct traffic on your blog toward pages where they are more likely to see your affiliate links.

7. Diversify without Clutter

Don’t put all your affiliate efforts into one basket. There are plenty of products out there to link to so there is no need to just work on one. At the same time you shouldn’t clutter your blog up with too many affiliate program links. If you do so you run the risk of diluting the effectiveness of your links and could disillusion your readership.

8. Be Transparent

Don’t try to fool your readers into clicking links that could make you money. While it may not always feasible to label all affiliate links I think some attempt should be made to let people know what type of link they are clicking on. I also think consistency is important with this so readers of your blog know what to expect. For example here at ProBlogger usually put a note beside or under affiliate links to simply let readers know that that is what they are. On my Digital Camera Blog I don’t do this because of the large number of such links make it clear by the text around the link that clicking on it will take them to some sort of shop or information where a purchase is possible (ie a link my say ‘buy the XXX product’ or ‘get the latest product on XXX’.

9. Combine with other Revenue Streams

Affiliate programs and advertising programs are not mutually exclusive things. I’ve come across a few people recently who have said they don’t want to do affiliate linking because it will take the focus off their Adsense ads. While there is potential for one to take the focus off the other - there is also real potential for both to work hand in hand as different readers will respond to different approaches. You should consider the impact that your affiliate links have on other revenue streams - but don’t let one stop the other.

10. Track results

Most affiliate programs have at least some type of tracking or statistics package which will allow you to watch which links are effective. Some of these packages are better than others but most will at least allow you to see what is selling and what isn’t. Watching your results can help you plan future affiliate efforts. Keep track of what positions for links work well, which products sell, what wording around links works well etc and use the information that you collect as you work plan future affiliate strategies.

What tips would you give someone getting into affiliate programs? What has worked well for you? What hasn’t? Share you experience and ideas on affiliate programs below.

Norman Sheppard discusses website design and SEO in this post from his Web Design Guide.

Web Design to Make Money Online

I know from experience that designing a site that looks totally awesome but does not engage the principles of search engine optimization will be of no value to you or your client. Why do people want websites anyways? People to not venture onto the World Wide Web in order to remain obscure and anonymous. I have made many websites under the direction of company officials, even marketing “specialists” who are concerned only with wowing their superiors. They want Flash, swooping, flaming logos, dancing menus and wild color schemes. These designs do indeed wow the client and I get paid. Two weeks later I get “the call.” Hey Norm, why can’t I find my website on Google. It looks great but what’s the point if no one is going to see it.

Are you Adding Adsense to your Blog Too Soon?

Here’s one thing I noticed about people who don’t know much about making money online and especially with adsense. The first question they ask, before the first post is published or the first person stops by is “can I put adsense on my blog now”.

I think this question is frequently asked out of fear. Fear of “missing” a click you might get from one random visitor who accidentally finds your blog.

Justin Briggs writes about SEO techniques in his SEO Zombie blog. His latest post discusses some of the things you can do to help your ranking in the SERP's.

How to Rank Well in Google

As I mentioned in my last post, Rand Fishkin outed the #1 ranked site for “SEO Company”. The post did not claim that the site used black hat practices, but it does use fairly obvious link building methods. Their links screamed link anchor text optimization, which is a solid sign that they are manipulating their anchor text. This is something we all do, but Google does not like. Our job as SEOs is to make our links as natural as possible so that competitors cannot publicly out you. So let’s dig in deep here and look at what factors are allowing this site to rank #1 for “SEO Company”. Not only has it achieved a #1 ranking for this term, but it has also received site links. Site links are read as a type of “authority” by searchers because it makes the listing look more important. So how did this site rank number one in Google?

Here is a well written primer from David's Make Money Online blog. If you are thinking of selling eBooks this is a good place to start.

Affiliate Marketing of Digital Products
While it is true that there are a lot of marketers who make money - and big money I might add, through affiliate marketing, most of them are not doing it through ebooks. However, as an entrance into affiliate marketing, it may be a good place for you to start. Oh, who am I kidding? The urge to try the Make Money Online “niche” is so strong, it is almost intoxicating to some. After all, you see all these guys cruising around in their Ferraris on all of these pages promising you that you can do the same if you just buy their $197, $147, only $97, but hurry because this offer ends (fake calendar and clock ticking down to indicate urgency).

Several readers have taken advantage of my Niche Support program on my other blog and even incorporated the idea into their own sites. If you are looking for backlinks for your niche sites then check out Larry's Business Advertising site.

Advertising Business - Online Training
The easiest way to get links for technically disadvantaged and computer illiterate is Grizzly’s MMO blog - Niche Support. After reading Grizzly's blogs I wanted to get involved. My blogs weren’t ready yet but I thought it was a good idea so I E-mailed everybody on the Niche Support page and offered to put anchored links on my sites. I got quite a few takers and gave them links. What I got out of it was some good contacts and tips and I think some gave me links although I didn’t ask for them I appreciate it. My blogs were just started and weren’t really ready yet.

Give it Away Now

I know we all want the money; most of us want to be filthy rich. And, of course, the economic crisis is in the forefront of everyone’s minds lately. We are all worried about money. Here’s something to put it in perspective though; I’ve seen various different versions of the stats (some higher, some lower), but they all go something like this:

Make Money Online with Pay Per Click

One of the more or less shared dreams in the internet marketing world is to make fast money. Since we’ve been starting this blog, earlier this year, I’ve joined a lot of forums about the ways to make money on the internet. After a couple of months I understood why there are so many people who never manage to make any money online, not to mention making it fast.

This article is not going to teach you anything, it’s not a tutorial for online money making tools, it is just my need to share a few thoughts with you, thoughts about this strange industry where many people don’t think about themselves of doing something, or running a business, but rather they imagine that they make money olnine.

Blogging Tips

There are three types of bloggers. Those that do it for fun, those that want to become rich and those that do it because they want to market themselves. The first group can do whatever they want and will still be happy with it. The other two groups need knowledge about blogging if they want to become successful.

Someone who wants to earn money from blogging needs traffic more than anything else. It is not hard to put Google Adsense on a blog and earn money with it. The ad might not be optimized but it will still earn money if the blog receives traffic. Without traffic, there will be no money no matter how optimized or clever the ad units are.

Making Money Online

There are a few things I wish I had known when I started trying to make money online. Its taken me almost a year since I decided to seriously make money on-line. I still am not making a full-time income at this game: and I feel as if I am finally starting to understand which way to go. However I think I have finally got to the point that I know what I need to do to create my own

Is My Adsense Being Smart priced

Ever since I read that Grizzly had doubled his income by eliminating Smart Pricing from his AdSense, I decided it was well worth my while to see if I had been smart priced too.

In case you don’t know, AdSense’s Smart Pricing is when AdSense reduces the price it pays you per click, based on some not totally understood method which takes into account how well your site’s traffic converts for the advertiser. Some people think it is based on click-through-rate (CTR), but this is not true.

How to Earn Money Online

Chances are that heading made most people move on. Articles about making money online or about How to Earn Money Online are a dime a dozen. People see what A-list bloggers like Shoemoney, John Chow and Problogger have achieved, start up new blogs, start posting about topics with article headings like the heading of this article, and just wait for the money to come in. I know, because, to some degree I was one of these jackasses. I started this blog with the intention to make a bit of money. I wanted 1000’s of visitors, I wanted them to click on my ads and I wanted to make some cash to support my full time job.

I have talked at length about not following the advice or lead of the "Gurus". Here is a case in point; Stephen Cronin from his web development blog, rightly questions Seth Godin and the advice Seth gives.

Seth Godin May be Costing You Money

This morning I noticed an entry on Sphinn highlighting GreyWolf's Seth Godin Wants to Cheat Advertisers with Fake Clicks post. It discusses Seth Godin's Ads are the new online tip jar post, which suggests that readers should click ads to reward bloggers for their writing. To quote Seth:

"If you like what you’re reading, click an ad to say thanks."

GreyWolf condemns Seth’s advice and rightly points out that anyone following this advice is guilty of click fraud:

"If you click on an ad and your purpose is to make sure the site owner or blogger gets money from the click, and you had no intent to buy or research, that is click fraud."

As you’d expect, given they are Internet Marketing / SEO communities, comments on GreyWolf’s post and on Sphinn strongly condemn Seth’s statement. The majority of commentators agree that this is click fraud. I concur! More...

To Make Money Online You Need to Know...

Maki at Dosh Dosh asks readers, “What's the best way to make money online?”

One of the things I like about Dosh Dosh is that it really covers just about every method you could use the internet as a source of income. It’s not just about blogging for money, but includes things like: membership sites, selling your own product, eBay, affiliate sales, and leveraging an existing business. It really is a site about making money online.

Why You Need to Network

It’s never easy to get anything in life 100% on your own. The facts are that you need other people to advance whether you’re trying to climb the corporate ladder or Google’s serp. Making connections with others is key to success.

With that said, I’d like to do for my readers what Grizz has proposed to do for his:

I plan to send out links to anyone who has written “an on topic” post about my blog, copymastermind.com. By “on topic” I mean anything related to “making money online”. For example, you could have a “book” blog-as long as your post is about making money selling/writing books or ebooks and you link to me, I will link back to you.

The Most Trusted Make Money Online Resources

"If you are looking for ways to make money on the Internet, where do you turn to learn how?

Do you buy an overpriced ebook that some smuck is selling for $49.95? There are tons of them out there and they all promise to “unlock the secret” of how to make money. Please don’t buy those.

Do you read all the how to make money A-List blogs that tell you how they make money online by telling people how much money they make online? Many people waste months of their lives reading these blogs before they figure out they are mostly a waste of time. Save your time!"More ...

One of the most important aspects of making money online is SEO. This involves many things but optimizing Keywords and Backlinking are central to any success you might have. Carla from Wordplay relates her experience with SEO and the importance of keywords below.

Search Engine Optimization 101

"Those who truly seek to understand and implement SEO know it takes study, a time investment and even some experimentation to achieve good results. It also helps if you can follow the advice of someone who has already achieved that success. Actually, that can make all the difference in the world.

When I began this blog, I had no idea what I was doing. I made every mistake in the book, SEO-wise. And I thought I didn’t care whether I got traffic, because I created WordPlay as a showcase for my editorial consulting business. I just wanted a blog that looked somewhat pretty and had interesting content that I could link to my company Web site. But then I made a few tweaks that brought me more traffic. Before long I was hooked on hits." More...

Free Game Downloads

"A quick search of one of my favorite keyword tools tells me that the phrase "free game downloads" gets over 80,000 searches per month. If you could get a good ranking in the search engines for that phrase you would be getting a ton of traffic. Unfortunately, there is a lot of competition for free game downloads so it will we a tough fight to make it to page one. You may want to choose a related long tial keyword for easier pickings."More ...

Know the Value of Links

"Google does not condone this, but a lot of web masters buy and sell links. SEO specialists help you buy and sell links. That’s all they do. So, it makes sense to research up on the value of links.

When i first started out, I couldn’t believe how much John Chow was making. I didn’t understand how it was possible. But, I now understand why he makes so much money. It’s because he has a lot of noobie fans. A lot of other MMO bloggers kiss his arse to get some of his crumbs. This whole economy is supported by the ignorance of noobie bloggers."More ...

This post comes from madWAHM who pens the blog MadWAHM.com and she discusses the "Ugly" blog techniques that are known to work for many well known sites in spite of all the hype surrounding flashy looking websites

Ugly Blogs and Websites Make Money

"If you’re spending a lot of time worrying about how flashy, cool and hot your website or blog looks, it may be costing you potential revenue.

Early last year I read “The Surprising Truth About Ugly Websites” by Mark Daoust. This startling and provoking read examines the ideas and theories behind why ugly seems to sell.

Now, I’m not talking about “ugly” as in using those huge bolded fonts, in all caps or harsh and clashing colors. I’m talking about ugly in the sense of plain, basic and without frills. Like sites that are extremely clean, simple and highly functional and that don’t focus on design aesthetics, but rather on making their sites unbelievably user-friendly." More...

Do You Follow The Herd?

"Everyday there'll be thousands of new bloggers coming out of the woodworks and you bet many have one main thing in mind - how to make money online. Many of these bloggers are like regular visitors to the A-list blogs. You would think they have learned a lot from these visits but when you check them out at their own blogs one can conclude that there's a lot to be desired. Pretty dumb! They must be wearing blinkers!

What can you do to be different and set yourself apart? Think differently (out of the box) and be more unique than what the masses are doing." More ...

How to Make Money Fast

"Lots of people turn to the internet as a way to make money online. However the biggest problem people face is being overwhelmed by information. They read, read and read even more and the end result is total confusion. Months can go by with very little action being taken and when people do get started they seem to think that they’ll make money fast. This just isn’t the case and if you think you’ll be able to give up your day job in a matter of a few weeks you are very much delusional. The Truth About Making Money Online

"When I first started researching and learning how to blog I put a lot of time and effort into reading the traditional blogs about making money online. One thing I realized was that none of them really taught me how to make money online. Out of the three hundred blogs that I read, at the time, not one blogger laid out a plan a true strategy for making money online. most of what I learned centered around building readership, RSS, and social media traffic so you can sell ad space. It made sense, at the time. But, selling ad space is not a strategy for making money online, it is a strategy for selling ad space online." more
